About Gates of the Arctic National Park: Coined by the legendary adventurer and wilderness advocate Robert Marshall, The Gates of the Arctic describes Frigid Crags and Boreal Mountain as the entryway into the arctic world of the north. The park is the centerpiece of nearly 35 million acres of protected areas running the 700 mile expanse of the Brooks range. Home to herds of moose, caribou, dahl sheep, wolves, and grizzly and black bears, Gates of the Arctic provides unparalleled prospects for wildlife viewing, wilderness travel, adventure and solitude. The Kobuk, Koyukuk and Alatna Rivers offer world-class angling and a variety of rafting and kayaking opportunities. Access is limited by transportation, the park averages approximately 4,000 recreational visitors each year and most rely on experienced bush pilots to drop them off and pick them up.
