About Kobuk Valley National Park:
You’ll find no roads, restaurants, parking, trails or campgrounds here. Even the park headquarters is located a plane ride away. With its southernmost border lying 26 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Kobuck Valley is the least visited of all the national parks. This park is nestled between the Waring Mountains to the south and the Baird Mountains to the north and is chock full of geological wonders, delicate plant life and relics from the days when North America and Asia were one. The Great Kobuck, Little Kobuk and the Hunt River Sand Dunes are the largest active sand dunes within the Arctic Circle and cover some 25 square miles. Known as the “nomads of the north”, between 300,000 and 500.000 caribou cross the Kubuk River as they head south from their summer birthing grounds to wait out the winter each year.
